We are "a Eucharistic family, committed to inspiring a visible expression of Jesus Christ, as we follow His life and ministry".
History
In 1905, the first Mexican immigrant settled in Newton with his family. They were brought here to maintain the steel web of tracks for the Santa Fe Railroad Company. From then on, a steady trickle of families began to take up residence in the community.
Endowed with a deep Catholic faith and steeped in Christian traditions, the colony found refuge to their spiritual wants in St. Mary's Catholic Church. The colony grew larger and larger and it became necessary to establish its own services to serve its spiritual needs.
Msgr. William Schaefers, assistant pastor at St. Mary's, took the initiative and began to offer Mass in private homes in the spring of 1919. Mass was said in homes on Sundays and Holy Day for about 6 months. The colony numbered 40 families, and the house of worship was too small, even from the beginning. Under the direction of Fr. Moses Maguire of St. Mary's, a mission chapel was quickly erected (at a cost of only $3,000), under the name of "Our Lady of Guadalupe". This chapel of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe was locted on 600 W. First St.
This chapel was enlarged in the fall of 1920, with the addition of a sacristy. The chapel continued to be served by priests from St. Mary's until 1933. At that time, Augustinian fathers from Hutchinson began to minister to the Hispanics of Newton.
In 1938, the first pastor was appointed. Fr. Joseph Muñoz was named the first pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. He served as pastor here until 1941. Several other priests served OLG for a few years, until Fr. Oliver Kreseminiski, OFM took the helm in 1947.
At the beginning of his tenure as pastor, Fr. Oliver, with the help of the Parish Committee, began a special building fund, to construct a new church. Their efforts were highly successful and 17 acres of land were purchased in 1955. This land, located on SW 5th Street, is the site of the current church. Nearing the beginning of construction, Fr. Oliver died suddenly on January 16, 1956. Less than a month later, Fr. Francis Cox was appointed pastor of Our Lady, with the task of completing the building project. The contruction work began in July 1958, and on May 17, 1959, Our Lady of Guadalupe church was completed. This A-frame structure still stands as the main body of our parish church.
Many priests have continued to serve our parish in the years since. Fr. Jerry Beat expanded the foyer and built a large Parish Hall in 1989, and the basement was renovated into classrooms for catechism classes. Guadalupe Hall has hosted many celebrations for individual families and our wider community.
Most recently, Fr. Juan Garza led a major renovation of the inside of our church and sanctuary in 2017. This created a beautiful, modern space for us to worship God, as well as enhancing our office facilities.
Our legacy of faith is incredibly strong. With the help of Our Lady, we will persevere and adapt to serve those around us.
